How To Take Care Of Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin can be a real problem to deal with. A lot of women are struggling with keeping their skin healthy and radiant, especially if it reacts to most products they try. There are several things you can pay attention to, so you can make the whole process easier.

Check Product Ingredient List

For every new product that you introduce in your routine, first, check what it’s made of. Sensitive skin does not tolerate items that contain alcohol, fragrances, and often parabens. Make sure that everything you use is hypoallergenic.

This week’s #Suspicious6Saturday: alcohols. Alcohols can be a confusing topic in skincare, because there are good, hydrating alcohols and then there are those that can be drying. Right now, we’re talking about the latter—those alcohols that have the potential to dehydrate and sensitize—and are identified by the names SD alcohol, denatured alcohol, alcohol denat, natural alcohol, grain alcohol, ethyl alcohol or just plain *alcohol* on an ingredient list.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In skincare products, alcohol is used to thin the texture of a formula, to stabilize or to enhance the penetration of actives (like vitamin C, for example). It’s *really* challenging to get ingredients into skin because of the lipids and oil-like substances (AKA natural moisturizing factors, or NMFs) it contains. These NMFs keep your skin’s barrier supple and healthy, but they also keep many actives (like retinol or most antioxidants) out. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Drying alcohols clear the way for actives by dissolving those protective lipids and NMFs up, but that also means your skin misses out on the important things that those NMFs do (like keep it moisturized, soothed and soft). It’s not exactly a winning strategy for skin.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We’d rather stick to alternatives that don’t have the baggage that drying alcohols do (stripped skin, redness, dehydration or irritation-induced breakouts). Avoid Scrubs

Scrubs can be a little too much for sensitive skin. A part of their ingredients can cause additional irritation. When you use scrubs you take away the oils on the surface that actually protect the skin.

Use Natural Alternatives

Products that are based on chemical ingredients might not be the best solution for your gentle skin. That is why you should always opt for natural alternatives. Even if the face cream is based on natural ingredients some of them can be irritating. Those include Vitamin C, retinol, which should be used only once or twice a week. The safest and best ones are aloe vera, organic oils of all types, chamomile, Vitamin E and more.
