Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays and for good reason – the food is amazing! Green bean casserole, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, turkey, pumpkin pie… we could go on and on. Have you ever wondered how people’s favorite dishes differ across parts of the United States? We did and we found out which foods are most popular in different regions.
Nate Silver from FiveThirtyEight conducted a pole with Survey Monkey to find out about people’s favorite Thanksgiving dishes. Did your favorite food make the cut?
Main Dish
In regards to main dishes, the turkey was the most popular by far, with 82% of people voting for it, but chicken, pork, and roast beef also made it on the list.
Side Dish
For side dishes, the country was a lot more divided. People from the West coast’s favorite side is a salad, in the South, it’s cornbread, in the Southeast it’s mac and cheese, in New England it’s squash, in the Midwest it’s green beans/casserole, and in the Mideast, it’s rolls/biscuits.
Desserts
It’s no surprise that pumpkin pie is one of America’s favorite desserts on Thanksgiving, but these pies also made the cut. In New England and the Midatlantic, they enjoy apple pie, in the South, it’s pecan and sweet potato pie, and in the Midwest and New England, they eat cherry pie.
