Mattress Startups are Offering Mattresses at Affordable Prices

Getting a good night’s sleep affects all aspects of our health, from our productivity and interactions with others to our metabolism and immune system. Did you know that we spend about one-third of your life in bed?

That’s about 26 years in bed! In fact, we spend more time in bed than we do doing any other activities throughout the day.

But, for some reason, we don’t spend as much money on bedding as we do for other expenditures. This may be because although sleep is imperative to our functioning, buying a new mattress isn’t nearly as exciting as purchasing a new sports car or luxury watch. After all, the only time we use a mattress is when we’re sleeping, so how can we enjoy something when we’re not awake?

Have you given any thought to what you’re sleeping on night after night? Yes, mattresses are a major investment when it comes to the home, but there are many new startups that have transformed the way we buy mattresses. Because let’s face it, no one has the time to go to a mattress store and test out over 500 potential beds, while trying not to get overwhelmed by the pushy sales associate and steep prices. Now, with just a few easy clicks you can get a mattress designed for your needs that will ship straight to your door.

How Do Mattress Startups Work?

Mattress startups have made it possible to try out beds without leaving your home. The mattresses are not only more convenient, but they’re also cheaper. All you have to do is buy a mattress online and it will come shipped to your door (usually within a week). Upon shipment, you’ll have a set amount of time to try it out and if you don’t like it you can return it for a full refund. Most companies allow you to test the product out for 100 days and some even all you to try the mattress for a full year.

If you’re wondering how companies are able to ship a mattress, most mattresses are made from memory foam, which allows them to be compressed and rolled for shipping. They expand once you unroll them. If you’re used to sleeping on a spring-based mattress, it will take you a few days to get used to memory foam mattresses.

Different Types of Mattresses

There are many different types of mattresses and they all come at different price points. The three main types of mattresses available are foam, innerspring, and adjustable air. As mentioned, mattress startups usually use foam because it’s easy to ship. Foam also molds to your body and it softens when you lie into it. When you get back up it goes back to its original shape. For those suffering from back pain, memory foam helps alleviate the aches because they mold to your body for support. Innerspring mattresses are the more traditional model and they’re probably what you’re used to sleeping on. These mattresses are composed of steel coils and they can include some cushioning like a pillow top layer or infused gel. Moving positions is easy, but when you shift there is also a slight bounce, which can disturb your sleeping partner. Air mattresses are inflatable and you can achieve the firmness you desire by pumping it with as much air as you want.

Best Startup Mattresses

We’ve narrowed it down to three startup mattress companies that are convenient and cost-effective.

  1. Casper: You’ve probably already heard of this company as Kyle Jenner is a major endorser or you’ve seen it advertised all over subway stations. The mattresses are made of latex and memory foam, which means they won’t lose bounce or overheat like other foam-based beds. Starting at $595 (for a twin), you’ll get to try the mattress for 100 days and there’s a 10-year warranty.
  2. Helix: With Helix, you’ll develop your own sleep profile after you fill out a questionnaire that accesses your height, weight, sleeping style, and firmness preference. There’s even the option to get a split mattress so you and your partner can both sleep happy. A twin mattress will cost you $600 and they come with a 10 or 15-year warranty. You have 100 days to see if the mattress is the right fit for you.
  3. Lessa: This hybrid mattress has the best features of the traditional spring and foam mattresses. Although it’s a bit more expensive than other startup mattresses, it’s also regarded as the most comfortable model. The twin will cost you just under $1000, but it’s now on sale for $799. Like other companies, they guarantee a 10-year warranty and you have 100 days to test out the product.
