Who doesn’t love avocados? But what we don’t care for is how expensive they are. Have you ever thought of growing your own and is it possible? If you live in a place where it’s hot like California, Hawaii, Florida, or Texas you’re in luck as these are the perfect spots to make your dream of having an avocado tree come true. Here’s your step-by-step guide to doing so.

Step 1: Pick a Variety and Buy Seeding

Did you know there are over 500 varieties of avocados? Hass is the most popular. After you’ve picked the variety, buy your avocado seeding from a garden or nursery.

Step 2: Figure Out When and Where to Plant It

The best time to plant your tree is during the spring between March and June in a spot that gets lots of sunlight. Keep it away from other trees, your home, and power lines because avocado trees need lots of space.

Step 3: Plant Your Avocado Tree

Make a hole three to four times the diameter of the container your seeding is in and make sure the soil is level with the top of the rootball.

Step 4: Add Mulch and Water

After you plant the tree, add a thick layer of mulch and lots of water. For the first week, water your tree every other day. Then water it once or twice a week.

Step 5: Fertelize

In order to grow and develop, your tree needs to be nourished with nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, and zinc. During the first year, fertilize it three times—in the spring, summer, and fall.
