How to Start and Stick With Running

Running is a great high-impact exercise that can be done anywhere and doesn’t require expensive gyms or equipment. Deciding to start running can be intimidating as it takes a while to build-up to the distance and time you wish to achieve. You can’t automatically start running and expect to be able to run a marathon. Here are some ways to make running more enjoyable and easier.

Start With Time Not Distance

When starting off with running, deciding to run a certain distance is really difficult. Instead of looking at the distance, try running for a set amount of time like 10-20 minutes. Once you reach this goal continue increasing it until you reach the distance you’re hoping for.

It’s Okay to Walk

Try using run/walk intervals to build your endurance. By taking breaks for walking, you’re decreasing your heart rate and giving your muscles time to relax.

Find a Running Partner

Running with a friend or a group of runners can motivate you to run longer and to push yourself harder.

Use the Right Equipment

Finding the right shoes is important because running is really hard on your joints. For your first pair of running shoes head to a specialty sports store so they can look at your stride and help you find a shoe that’s right for you. There’s also running clothes that are sweat-wicking or wind-protecting that make it more enjoyable to run.

Hold Yourself Accountable

Mark off every time you go for a run on a calendar that’s somewhere visible so you can see it throughout the day. Also, setting a time in your day for your run will help you follow through with it. If you plan on running after work, bring your exercise gear with you, so you’re not tempted to stop at home.
