One of the things we look forward to most while on vacation is tasting all of the local cuisines of the place we’re visiting. Each country has its signature dishes and we feel obligated to try all of them when traveling to new destinations. But if you’re trying to stick to a healthy lifestyle it can be really challenging while on vacation. You’re left trying to decide if you should be healthy or indulge in some treats. Here are some tips so for eating healthy without depriving yourself on vacation.
Don’t Skip Breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so don’t skip it. Enjoy the hotel buffet breakfast and fill your plate with fruits, whole-wheat breads, and eggs. Avoid bacon and pastries.
Avoid the Mini-Bar
Instead of having the sugary and salty snacks at the hotel, go to a local farmers’ market and treat yourself to fresh, in-season fruits and veggies. It’s also a great way to explore the town.
Enjoy Local Dishes
Before you head out on your trip, do some research to see the signature dishes in the country and make sure you treat yourself to them. If you’re in Italy order pasta, if you’re in Japan eat some sushi, and if you’re in France munch on a croissant. Order these foods at lunch, and for dinner have lighter meals.
Indulge a Bit
Enjoy your vacation and eat that dessert. Just don’t go too crazy and keep in mind portion sizes. Also, don’t forget that alcoholic drinks have a lot of hidden calories so stay clear of ones made with juice and sip on simple cocktails or wine.
