Split ends are an inevitable part of having long hair, or hair at all for that matter. Over time, the bottom of our hair becomes damaged or splintered, resulting in dreaded split ends. Although you cannot avoid split ends altogether, there are things you can do to reduce your chances. Here is the lowdown.

Trim Regularly

Split ends become a problem when the hair continues to split higher and higher. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to get your hair trimmed regularly. If you happen to spot a stray split end, snip it off yourself before it travels up to the root.

Deeply Condition

Deeply conditioning your hair to keep it healthy and happy. Applying a leave-in conditioner is a great way to protect your hair from the natural elements and leave your hair looking shiny.

Minimize Use of Heated Appliances

Flattening and curling irons are major hair antagonists. Using them regularly leaves your hair drier and more brittle. This increases the chances of split ends and damaged hair. If you can’t resist a blowdry in the morning, make sure you use a heat-protection product.

Gentle Drying

When you’re in a rush, it is tempting to vigorously rub your hair with a towel in an attempt to dry it as quickly as possible. This is actually a cause of split ends due to tangling and damage risk. Be gentle with your hair and your hair will be good to you.

Gentle Brushing

The “gentle” rule applies to brushing as well. Don’t aggressively comb your hair from top to bottom. If you are prone to knots and tangles, start from the bottom and gently work your way up.
