Looking to Accommodate Extra Household Items? Here’s Why You Need to Rent a Storage Unit

Thinking about moving to a new house is overwhelming, especially if you have a lot of stuff. You need a space to store all your belongings and finding one isn’t always easy. That’s where storage units come in—you can rest assured that all of your possessions are safely kept.

Storage units will help you put away things that take up too much space, that you aren’t using, but still don’t want to get rid of. They are one of the ways to make your house more organized and clutter-free.

Some of your most prized possessions such as wine collections, require specific conditioned environments and other things need to be protected from mishandlings or theft.

Getting a Storage Unit

Choosing the right storage unit isn’t as easy as you’d think. But, by doing some research and asking people who’ve had experience with storage units before jumping into getting one, you can find one that meets your needs. The whole process will be much smoother.

Do’s and Don’ts

When choosing a storage unit, make sure you go with a dependable storage company and don’t rush your decision. When possible, do extensive research and ask your family and friends for recommendations.

In regards to packing, whatever you do, don’t just throw things into boxes. Make sure you label the items and boxes, so when you need to find them later you’re able to.

Always avoid storing perishable or breakable items when you can, but if you need to, wrap them with clothing or blankets.

Although most companies offer security for storage units, having your own security is important. Always secure your unit with an additional lock and when possible, a door alarm. The storage unit should also have limited access, as the more people who can enter your unit, the more likely items are to get damaged or go missing.

Just remember that your storage unit is like an extension of your home, so treat it like it one.

How Much Does a Storage Unit Cost?

The cost depends on many factors including:

  1. Location: The cost of storage units depends on the location. Cities will be more expensive than less developed areas and if you want to save money, look for options locally. If you’re willing to travel a bit further and sacrifice having the storage unit near you, you can save money.
  2. Storage Requirments: If you’re planning on storing valuable items that require certain climates, the cost will increase.
  3. Time: Some facilities have minimum storage periods and they may offer discounts for long-term storage contracts. Others charge monthly, which is convenient for customers. Before you sign any contract, look carefully at the terms and make sure you know how long you want to store your items.
  4. Size: For larger storage units, they will cost more money. If you want to keep the cost down, sort through your items and get rid of the ones you don’t need, so you can get a smaller storage unit. It’s the perfect opportunity to have a garage sale or donate to charity. Get rid of any items that are broken or that you don’t think you’ll use again. You don’t want to pay for items that you’ll end up throwing out.
  5. Insurance: When you’re researching storage units, make sure you ask about their insurance policy. Some places require you to have insurance.
